Diet and Exercise - As Simple As Possible...but... →
zenhabits: From what I can gather, simplicity is one of the basic tenets of achieving vigorous health for a lifetime. If I can simplify the things I need to do then I’m doing a good job. This is exactly what I believe in. Obsessing about different diets etc is micro-managing something that can be dealt with in a very simple way.

How to Make Today into a 25-Hour Day →
(via zenhabits) I got to say, in my humble opinion, that this is a load of BS. Apart from watching less telly, I disagree with almost all propositions. If you’ve got so much to do that you can’t sleep enough (even you try to “catch up” on weekends) you’ve got your priorities screwed up. And when you’re eating lunch, just eat lunch. Don’t work at the same...

Could Avatar get people to think?
Saw Avatar today. Nothing new in the story telling, gorgeous 3D imagery though. But the reason I write about it here is the reports of people getting depressed and suicidal after seeing the film. I agree with a twitterer that folks who get depressed when they realise they can’t visit the film’s fictional planet should get out more. But there seems to be some genuine thinking being...

Please leave.
mmnml: if you’re feeling that distracted, the last thing you need is a web site about minimalism. please really think about this for at least 20 seconds. then, close this window, and go disappear into your real work. instead of repeatedly visiting a web site about how to avoid distractions. good work. Yes. I posed a related question just a few days ago.

Are you medicating something you caused yourself? →
“Writing on a computer is tough. As I’m writing, I’m getting Twitter notifications, new emails, and seemingly eight million other things clamoring for my attention. Ommwriter, a gorgeous, full-screen writing application, ignores all of those, and just lets you write.” Excuse me for asking a silly question, but why do you have Twitter or your email app fired up when you are writing? ...

Pentti Linkola in english →
I was surprised to find a page in english about controversial finnish eco activist Pentti Linkola. Although I don’t like all his views, I agree whole heartedly with his views on deep ecology.

This is winter
Southern Finland has had a rare white christmas this time. I’m enthralled by the beautiful white surfaces and I enjoy the freezing wind on my face. This is winter! Then I come to think about how increasingly rare a proper snow cover is going to be in the years to come, and it saddens me. I’m tempted to start down the thought spiral that ends somewhere in climate change induced...

The One Week Digital Cleanse
jhnmyr: I floated the idea last week on Twitter to see if anyone could envision themselves doing this, and the responses were interesting; some said they could definitely do it, but many were resigned to the idea, calling it impossible. If it is impossible, than my theory is already proven and we’re in big trouble as a society. If you really think this would be impossible for you, that’s...

When money matters more than sanity
It’s so sad. Today there was the third amok shooting in Finland in three years (read more here). Even though this gunman’s weapon was an illegal one I cannot help but wish we had stricter gun laws. 1,6 million guns and 5 million people, well… And even more than that i wish we would recognise how many of us are mentally unwell. These shootings are a symptom, and at the moment we as a spciety...

Keeping an open mind
During the holidays I read the book Kun Lun by Liisa Cay Pasila. It’s a nice little book presenting asian wisdom through a simple back story, and I enjoyed it. But as I read the book, I realised I recognised the quotes, stories and principles that the author wanted to present. I was then doubly surprised, when not only did the story feature a nice twist in the plot, but I also found myself...

Making it count
Minimalism is about making it count. When the Finnish magazine Suomen luonto (Finland’s Nature) chose fireworks as the winner of their “vanity of the year” award they made many people angry. On the net many called them party poopers. But when I think back 20 years I can still remember the new years fireworks I watched as a kid. There was one big show everyone went to see and it...

Christmas gift idea
Here’s a cheap and minimalist idea I heard from a friend last week: Find out what book your gift’s recipient has been wanting to read for a while. Then go to the library, borrow the book, package it and give it as a gift. After the borrow period expires, return it on the recipients behalf. I think this is a great gift for the following reasons: It costs no money, just some time and...

It's in the small things
After the disappointment of the Copenhagen climate conference I find myself starting another attempt at blogging. I think this article sums up most of my frustration. The opening paragraph already says a lot: “The most progressive US president in a generation comes to the most important international meeting since the Second World War and delivers a speech so devoid of substance that he...
